Rio Ferdinand tells Argentina Kylian Mbappe's role in France's biggest "weakness"

Rio Ferdinand believes France are vulnerable down the left due to the attacking talents of Kylian Mbappe and Theo Hernandez.

The defending champions booked their spot in Sunday's World Cup final after beating Morocco 2-0 at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday. Goals from Hernandez and substitute Randal Kolo Muani were enough to end Morocco's fairy-tale run to the semi-finals.

France will now face Argentina and their legendary talisman Lionel Messi at the Lusail Stadium in the final. Manchester United hero Ferdinand thinks Argentina can win their first World Cup since 1986 if they target France's left side, which he calls their "weakness".

"If you look at France’s weakness, and there aren’t many of them, but their left side is an area of the pitch I thought opponents have been targeting," Ferdinand told BBC Sport.

"You look at it, a third of the chances they’ve conceded have come from that side of the pitch. This is unfortunate - [Lucas] Hernandez obviously gets a serious injury on this side but it’s become a common thing throughout the World Cup.

"Against Denmark, they immediately go for that side of the pitch - and one of the things I looked at and thought maybe that could be the reason is you’ve got Mbappe on that side of the pitch, maybe that gives licence to stay higher up the pitch.

"But that puts pressure on that side of the pitch. Against England, [Bukayo] Saka and [Harry] Kane caused a mistake and this was the foul for the penalty that never was."

Mbappe is undeniably one of the best players at the World Cup and is the tournament's joint-leading scorer with five goals. Yet the Paris Saint-Germain star isn't renowned for his defensive work, while Hernandez is also an attacking-minded player.

Hernandez's brother Lucas is Didier Deschamps' first-choice left-back, but the Bayern Munich ace suffered a serious knee injury during their opening World Cup game against Australia. He is not expected to play again this season due to the injury.

Argentina must find a way to overcome France on Sunday if they to end their long wait for a world title. Captain Messi is arguably the greatest ever player never to win the World Cup and will be desperate to lift the trophy after losing the 2014 final to Germany.

Lionel Scaloni's side were brilliant in their 3-0 win against Croatia on Tuesday, with Messi scoring a penalty and assisting Julian Alvarez's second goal. Messi is enjoying his finest ever World Cup campaign and, like Mbappe, has five goals to his name in Qatar.

Beating France will be difficult. Deschamps' side have reached the World Cup final without Karim Benzema, Paul Pogba and N'Golo Kante. Adrien Rabiot and Dayot Upamecano were also absent for the semi-final due to illness, such is their strength in depth.
