Rio Ferdinand has delivered his own damning verdict on the recent departure involving former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The 32-year-old drew to a close his time in North London earlier this week by completing a move to Spanish giants Barcelona.
Aubameyang had been stripped of the captaincy following a disciplinary breach and with there seemingly being no chance of reconciliation between club and player, he departed for La Liga.
With the Gunners set to save a whopping £29million in wages following the Gabonese forward's departure, Ferdinand has backed Barcelona's decision to recruit the forward, despite their ongoing financial troubles.
“I think Xavi looks at him as someone who has something to prove,'' he began.
''He wants to play football, he has experience and maybe he can fit the style he wants to play – that remains to be seen.
''He has a lot of young players there Xavi, so he needed someone with experience, and maybe someone like Aubameyang, who he probably feels he can rein in and refocus can be an asset."
Ferdinand also insisted it was in the best interests of both the club and the player to bring an end to the former Borussia Dortmund man's four-year stint at the Emirates Stadium.
“I wish him luck, for both parties, Aubameyang needed to leave, for his sake, for football’s sake and for Arsenal’s sake," he added.
''You don’t want it at the club, a player hanging around who is not really wanted by the manager.”
