Rio Ferdinand has praised the 'outstanding' David De Gea after the goalkeeper confirmed his Manchester United departure on Saturday.
De Gea announced the decision via his social media channels on Saturday afternoon, calling time on a 12-year spell at United. The 32-year-old's contract expired last weekend, with player and club unable to find an agreement over a new deal.
The Spain international's future had become increasingly uncertain after a number of high-profile errors last season, with manager Erik ten Hag eyeing a new first-choice option in the summer market and figures inside the club keen to move on. But despite a disappointing final campaign, Ferdinand insists De Gea will go down a legend.

"Whether you think David De Gea is good enough or not, that's up for debate," Ferdinand said via the FIVE UK Twitter account. "But he has been an unreal servant to this football club.
"12 years he's had at the club, similar to the amount of time I was at the club. Player of the Year I think four or five times in that time. Been phenomenal at times, the best player at the club in a few of those years.
"Had moments where it didn't go well, lost a bit of form and confidence at times but in the main has served the club remarkably well. Never been in trouble, never brought the club into disrepute, outstanding professional, great character, one of the boys."
De Gea made 545 appearances for United - a club record for a goalkeeper - and kept 190 clean sheets in all competitions. The veteran shot-stopper leaves Old Trafford having won the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League as well as two League Cups.
