Former Rangers hero Rino Gattuso has revealed he put his Ibrox teammate Paul Gascoigne under the microscope - and realised he would have to do the opposite to make it as a star player.
The World Cup winner but was brought to Ibrox by Walter Smith in 1997 before he was shipped out to Salernitana a year later in a £4million deal by Dick Advocaat with the Dutchman deciding the Italian wasn't part of his plans. He would go on to move to AC Milan and claim two Champions Leagues victories, as well as lifting two Serie A titles and that 2006 World Cup with his country.
Gattuso, who is currently manager at Valencia, has revealed working with England hero Gascoigne during his 12 month spell at Ibrox changed his outlook on the game and set him on the path to success. He said: "Meeting Paul Gascoigne at Rangers would turn out to be an important moment in my life.
"When I left Italy at 17, I knew I wouldn't be returning home. I knew I would have to work to succeed. I looked at Gascoigne and I immediately knew I had to do everything completely differently to him.
"He was an incredible player, but he completely lived his life to the full. I was a young boy, but it quickly became clear to me that if I wanted to make it as a top player, I had to live my life in the completely opposite way as him.
"He was extremely talented and I had to train seven or eight hours a day to improve to try and reach anything approaching his standard. Gascoigne had everything, but he didn't want to work or train."
