Rihanna to headline 2023 Super Bowl halftime show after turning down chance to star in 2019

Pop star Rihanna has previously said no to performing at the Super Bowl Halftime show. Next year the new mum will take centre stage.

Rihanna, who gave birth in May to her first child with partner rapper A$AP Rocky, posted to Instagram to confirm the announcement.

Holding an NFL football, Rihanna didn't post a caption, instead letting the picture tell the story.

Rap mogul Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, CEO of Rihanna's record label Roc Nation, depicted her as an inspiration.

"Rihanna is a generational talent, a woman of humble beginnings who has surpassed expectations at every turn," he said.

"A person born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the most prominent artists ever. Self-made in business and entertainment."

Rihanna has sold more than 60 million albums and 215 million digital tracks worldwide.

She has won eight Grammys and her music videos have been viewed more than 11.8 billion times.

The entrepreneur is also behind the Fenty cosmetic brand, with Forbes certifying her billionaire status last year.

Last year she was named a national hero of the Caribbean island of Barbados, where she was born and raised.

Rihanna declined previous offer amid Kaepernick controversy

The singer rejected an offer to perform in the 2019 halftime show out of solidarity with former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, who played for the San Francisco 49ers, was the most high-profile player to kneel during the national anthem before NFL games to protest against racial injustice and police brutality.

He hasn't played since 2016 and settled a collusion grievance against the NFL three years later.

The NFL announced a partnership with Roc Nation in August 2019, giving Jay-Z influence over their half-time shows and a hand in their social justice outreach programs. Jay-Z had also turned down an offer to perform in 2017.

The Super Bowl is arguably the biggest stage a performer can grace, and is seen by hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

Previous shows have starred the likes of Prince, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, The Weeknd, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars.

It has generated controversy, including the infamous "Nipplegate" incident when Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake performed together.

This year's Super Bowl halftime show featuring Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J Blige and Kendrick Lamar won three Creative Arts Emmys, including Outstanding Variety Special (Live), a first ever for the show.

The Super Bowl will take place on February 12 (US time) at Cardinals Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
