Ricky Gervais responds to brutal reviews of new Netflix show Alleycats

  • Ricky Gervais has launched his new animated sitcom, Alley Cats, on Netflix, featuring a gang of foul-mouthed stray felines attempting to help a lost kitten find its way home.
  • The six-part series, which premiered on Friday, 7 August, marks Gervais's first TV comedy since After Life concluded in 2022.
  • Alley Cats has received a largely negative critical reception, with many reviewers, including The Independent , The Telegraph , and Metro , giving it one or two-star ratings and criticising its excessively sweary and crude dialogue.
  • In response to potential criticism, Gervais took to X, stating that if viewers are offended, they should remember 'it’s just a cartoon about cats' and that 'you’re an adult, and can take it'.
  • Critics have described the show as 'abrasive, smug, and completely mirthless', with one reviewer calling it 'the worst thing to happen to cats since Cats' and another 'the worst thing' they had watched on TV that year.
