Netflix's After Life had a successful night at the 2022 National Television Awards on Thursday, October 13 and scooped the award for Comedy. Despite this, creator Ricky Gervais has confirmed that there "definitely" won't be another series following the third, emphasising that the story ended on the perfect note .
Talking following the win, Gervais said: "I've never done a third series of anything before. I've really loved it. It genuinely was my favourite show. The cast... I can't believe I got them. Genuinely this is a lovely ending, this is an amazing ending [to a show]." Earlier this year, After Life's third series premiered on Netflix and despite a mixed reception from critics, it was a hit amongst viewers.
The 61-year-old comedian and actor added: "This is the first time I want to do a third series of anything I've ever done. The world's too rich. I don't have to go over old ground. There's 10 characters who could be the lead in something."
Continuing his conversation with Digital Spy, Gervais said: "The first [series] was establishing a central character going through the world almost as if it's a video game. Now there's lots of 'meanwhiles'. It's like Springfield [from The Simpsons] or something."
After Life tells the story of newspaper writer Tony Johnson (played by Gervais), whose life is turned upside down after his wife dies from breast cancer. He contemplates suicide, but instead decides to spend his life punishing the world for his wife's death by saying and doing whatever he wants regardless of how it makes other people feel.
After the first series aired, viewers fell in love with After Life's ability to showcase warmth through dark comedy. Earlier this year, the show's bench, which is emblazoned with the words 'HOPE IS EVERYTHING', was installed in Victoria Park, Cardiff. You can read more about that here.
