‘Rick & Morty’ actress Spencer Grammer breaks silence about NYC stabbing, says everyone ‘got it wrong’

NEW YORK — “Rick & Morty” actress Spencer Grammer is telling her story more than two years after being stabbed in the hand while trying to “alleviate a fight” in New York City.

The 39-year-old, who is the daughter of Kelsey Grammer, told People she severed her median nerve and two tendons during the 2020 incident in the East Village, which is still under investigation and occurred while she was pursuing a graduate degree at Columbia University.

“I haven’t really talked about it before. But everybody else that wrote about it at the time got it wrong,” Grammer said.

Grammer says she “honestly shouldn’t have tried to help” but didn’t see the knife when she intervened. She “probably would do that same thing again” given the chance, she said.

The actress remains without “feeling in most of my hand,” she said, making tasks like buttoning an item of clothing difficult.

Grammer said she’s “only now at peace with being able to work again and perform at the productivity level I’d like to. I had to go through crazy rehab after my surgery [to repair the nerve damage].”

“I know that within five minutes your whole life can change, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. ... S— happens to everybody, and in the scheme of things, it was minuscule,” she said. “I still have a hand that works, and I’m OK. I’m going to be OK, and there are plenty of other people dealing with much worse and much more dire situations.”
