Review: Lewis Capaldi returns to Glasgow in a spectacular and hilarious sold-out show

Lewis Capaldi completely blew the roof off the OVO Hydro last night as his UK tour brought him home to Glasgow.

The singer truly knows how to put on a show and not only had his fans singing along to his anthems but had them in stitches with his comical one liners and quick wit.

The 26-year-old opened his sold-out show with his hit Forget Me, and it wasn't long before the crowd were chanting the lyrics back to him, amongst the confetti that had just been fired into the crowd.

Then Lewis spoke to the audience of the packed out Hydro, who went wild for him.

He said: "Glasgow, you beautiful f*****g c***s, how we doing? F*** it's good to be back, it's good to be back home, Glasgow! It's good to be back it's been a f*****g while since we played here, it's been a hot minute, the last time we played Glasgow was TRNSMT, was anybody at TRNSMT?"

The crowd cheered and Lewis said: "I didn't have any new music out whatsoever, and we were playing a headline set and people still showed up so thanks so much for that, and we do have new music for you to hear."

Looking out to the crowd, the singer spotted a sign from a fan which read: "Justice for the mangina".

He laughed: "Thank you very much!"

The sign comes as earlier this week, the star trolled himself on social media for the return of his 'mangina'.

The 'mangina' joke initially began in October last year, when Lewis shared a text message from his mum on social media after he took part in a TV interview.

His mum Carol called him out for his awkward trouser situation, writing: "Watched u on STV. You look as if you’ve got a mangina." to which Lewis replied: "Thanks mum x".

Lewis then went on to lay down some rules before he properly kicked off his gig.

He said: "Before we get started tonight I just want to say, 'No f****** fighting in here! I don't know what it is about my music but people love f*****g beating the s**t out of each other. Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle - scraps! So don't do that to me, don't be fighting in here cause then I'll be like for the rest of the night 'aw, who won?', it weighs heavy on me, it distracts me from my singing."

Before he went on to sing his next hit, Lewis thanked fans for selling out the Hydro once again.

He said: "Before we go any further, I just want to say thank you so much for selling it out this big lovely b*****d once again, this is the third time we've played here and you've sold it out so thank you, also if you bought tickets for the Edinburgh gig, thank you!

"Basically I'm saying, thank you for your money! It's been nice to pocket that cash. You guys are keeping me fed."

He then pointed back to his band and said: "Do you think these guys are playing my gig because they are my friends? No! I had to buy their affection. It really does mean the world and I can't thank you enough."

The singing sensation went for a simplistic but effective stage setup, with four separate platforms for his band.

Lewis donned a cream outfit as did the other members of his ensemble - whilst it gave mild East 17 vibes, we were totally here for it.

A large screen also hung above the stage which projected incredible visuals, and at one point, Lewis appeared on top of it as he played the piano. His setlist included Grace and Don’t Fade Away, Hold Me While You Wait and ended with his breakthrough hit, Someone You Loved.

And as he closed the show, yet another garment of lingerie was thrown on stage as well as a Scotland Flag.

Lewis certainly knows how to put on a show, and with an incredible voice like his, matched with his hilarious patter, it really was a night to remember.

The last time he played the Hydro was just before lockdown on March 5, 2020.

Lewis will be on tour until March, where it will end in Munich and then will be playing his massive outdoor show in Edinburgh's Royal Highland Showgrounds, which was only recently announced.

Just last week, tickets for Lewis Capaldi's Edinburgh show sold out in a matter of seconds as 30,000 fans got their hands on tickets.

The singing sensation said that he was 'lost for words' as fans scrambled to ensure their place at the huge new outdoor show at The Royal Highland Showgrounds in September this year.

The Pointless singer took to his Twitter to express his shock, saying: "actually properly lost for words 30,000 of ya just sold this out in seconds!!!!! i am your humble king."
