Retro foods boom for Sainsbury's as nostalgic shoppers seek out childhood favourites

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s has released the findings of its Summer 2022 Trends Report to reveal what the nation will be eating and drinking in the coming months. Nostalgic, childhood favourites are set to sweep the country, with the grocery chain reporting a bumper increase in searches for retro foods, including classics like Neapolitan ice cream and Battenburg cake.

The report focuses on what is set to be trending this summer, from fresh takes on classic favourites, to adventures in global cuisine. Complicated dinner parties are out with 90 per cent of hosts serving up prepared foods and ready meals. But shoppers are expecting more than just a ‘burger in a bun’ at barbecues, as they reach for the smokers and put marinated veg centre stage.

Director of product and innovation, Claire Hughes, said: “Sainsbury's has been helping customers cater for summer eating and drinking for 150 years, offering innovative products for occasions such as picnics, parties and barbecues. We often see food and drink trends come back around in popularity, something which has been particularly evident this year, as the nation turns to the comfort of familiarity in these challenging times.
