Retired US Capitol police officer Aquilino Gonell delivered a powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Gonell, who was severely beaten during the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, recounted the harrowing experience he faced as rioters stormed the building.

On that fateful day, Gonell found himself caught in a tunnel on the West Front of the Capitol, where he engaged in intense fighting with the violent mob. The rioters, armed with weapons and chemical irritants, unleashed chaos and violence, leaving many officers, including Gonell, injured.

Gonell's decision to retire from the US Capitol Police in 2022 was influenced by the lasting trauma he experienced as a result of the Capitol riot. The emotional and physical toll of that day played a significant role in his choice to end his career in law enforcement.
