Retired Justice V Ramasubramanian appointed as NHRC Chairperson

Retired SC Judge V Ramasubramaniam

New Delhi: After Dr DY Chandrachud, Ex-Chief Justice of India, didn’t accept the Govt’s proposal for the post of NHRC Chairperson,  the Centre on Monday appointed retd Supreme Court Judge V Ramasubramaniam as the next Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

 

 

He was appointed to the Apex Court on September 23, 2019. Retired Justice Ramasubramaniam demitted the office on June 29, 2023. 

Notably,  the tenure of retired Justice Arun Kumar Mishra ended on June 1. Since then, the post of the NHRC chairman was lying vacant. NHRC member Vijaya Bharti Sayani was appointed as the acting chairperson after Justice Mishra demiited the office. .

Education
Born on June 30, 1958,  he graduated in Chemistry from Ramakrishna Mission, Vivekananda College, Chennai and then studied Law in the Madras Law College. Then, he enrolled himself as a member of the Bar on February 16, 1983. Practiced for about 23 years in the High Court of Madras which included a stint in the office of the Senior Advocates.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court on July 31, 2006 and as a permanent Judge on November 9, 2009. 

Later, he was transferred on his own request to the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh with effect from April 27, 2016.

Following the bifurcation and the creation of a separate High Court for the State of Andhra Pradesh, retired Justice Ramasubramaniam was retained as a Judge of the High Court of Telangana at Hyderabad.
