Retail blow as 'cheapest gift shop' in Ayrshire town prepares to close

Retail in Ayr has suffered another blow with the news that the Ayr We Go gift shop, in Carrick Street, is to close.

Proprietor Steven Mackie told how he’s pulling the shutters down after being hit hard in recent months with costly utility bills.

The fledgling business started up in the Kyle Shopping Centre, selling football prints and a wide variety of other sports memorabilia.

But Steven was forced to find alternative premises after Covid-19 lockdown restrictions came into force, followed by the complete closure of the Kyle- to make way for a proposed new cinema complex.

Steven then moved the business to a vacant unit in Carrick Street in December last year.

However, despite his best efforts — and celebrity signing sessions from the likes of Celtic legend Danny McGrain — Steven still couldn’t make the business viable.

As a result, he’s announced the closure of Ayr We Go on social media.

Steven, 24, said: “Unfortunately with the current climate, remaining open simply is not possible.

“I have tried extremely hard this past year to try and build the cheapest gift shop in the town, but unfortunately it hasn’t been supported enough to make it viable.”

Steven said a number of factors were at play which prompted his decision to close the shop, including a lack of funding, increasingly costly utility bills and a lack of footfall.

Steven also had to dip into his savings to keep the business running.

However, the business will continue in a new format, according to the young businessman.

He said: “Ayr We Go will continue next year, focusing on the markets, Holy Fair and our beloved Air Show etc.

“I plan to invest in a van, a gazebo, and fold up tables, to be able to do more markets, as well as outside at the Sunday Market.”

He added: “I’d personally like to thank everyone from my friends, family, staff and customers for all the kind words of encouragement, and support over the last year."

Steven has announced a sale at the gift shop before its closure next month.

News of the closure was greeted with sorrow on social media.

One post read: “So sorry it has come to this, the last thing the town needs is more shops closing.”

Another said: “Sorry to hear this. I think you (Steven) should be proud of yourself for working hard and giving your best.

“Not many your age would contemplate starting a business, certainly in this economic climate.”
