Restaurants across Manchester are deciding to close as temperatures soar on the hottest day of the year. The likes of the Edinburgh Castle in Ancoats and Siop Shop in the Northern Quarter have decided it’s best to stay at home as the mercury heads towards 40 degrees.
Owners of the Edinburgh Castle said: “Due to high temperatures overnight, we’re having to close today. Unfortunately, we don’t have the right air con or facilities to keep our guests cool and staff staff in the unprecedented heat. We look forward to welcoming everyone back as soon as possible.”
The pub is instead directing customers towards its sister bar Cottonopolis, ‘where there's great air con and lots of cold cocktail offerings. Cafe and restaurant Siop Shop on Tib Street in the Northern Quarter is also closed today.

Taking to its social media yesterday, it said: “We’re running a short shift 9-2PM on Monday. Closed all of Tuesday. F**k that.” Butchers Quarter in the Northern Quarter and its other shop BQ Farm & Fish in Monton have also closed their doors for the day.
Also in the Northern Quarter, North Tea Power has said it’s closing up, while down at Hatch on Oxford Road, food traders Fuku and Cheeky Tikka will be closed too.
It follows news that food halls Altrincham Market, Mackie Mayor and the Picturedrome in Macclesfield are closing today too. Mackie Mayor, on Eagle Street in Ancoats, posted on their Instagram: "STAY COOL... Due to the mad temperatures predicted on Tuesday (19th) we’ve decided to close for the day... for the welfare of our staff and customers. Sorry for the inconvenience but don’t worry... we’ll be back to normal on Wednesday with a much more manageable temperature.”
The closure affects traders including Mumma’s Fried Chicken, Pico’s Tacos, Little Window and Tender Cow. Last night, a message on Tender Cow’s Instagram read: “Tomorrow, we’re shutting the kitchens and giving everyone the day off. Think it’s hot outside right now? Imagine the kitchen. We’ll be back Wednesday across the board.”
It’s thought that temperatures in Manchester will hit 39 degrees Celsius today, before cooling down considerably tomorrow.
