Restaurant owner says complaining customers are 'chavs who don't want to pay'

A restaurant manager has lashed out at complaining customers - describing them as "chavs who don't want to pay."

Seaway fish and chip shop has been hit with a string of bad reviews but staff insist "it's a load of old cobbler" as their food is fresh.

Diners have described their experience at the popular chippy in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire, as "utterly disgraceful" with poor service and food served cold.

But manager Mr Hussain defended the restaurant and said customers are happy to polish off their meals before launching a complaint.

He told Grimsby Live : "It's just chavvy people that come in here and they don't want to pay for their food.

"They've eaten it all and then they say, 'oh it was cold, it was this, it was that' yet they've finished all their food."

One diner, who did not wish to be named, visited Seaway with his wife and two of his children and described the experience as bad from start to finish.

He claimed that the food was "disgusting" and the service was below satisfactory with other diners at the chippy complaining that their fish was cold.

The dad claimed the manager sent young members of staff to handle complaints on his behalf rather than dealing with them directly.

"Me, my wife and two of our children sat down and it was noticeable the minute we walked in that something wasn't right," he said.

"The staff there clearly weren't of an age where they could make a sensible business decision if one needed to be made.

"It was busy, I get that, but the food was disgusting. We'd promised the kids a treat and they were starving.

"They hadn't eaten all day so we ate it with the intention of mentioning it when we came to pay.

"But then it quickly became apparent that the table next to us were going berserk at the quality of their meals, as were I think, two other tables. And there were only about six tables in the restaurant."

The diner claimed that, one by one, everybody asked to address the situation and speak with the manager who "point blank refused to engage in conversation."

He added: "He just kept passing messages on through who I'm assuming was his most experienced member of staff.

"He seemed to be the oldest, if nothing else. And even he certainly didn't look any older than 18.

"And [the manager] just left the staff to deal with it. I just thought it was utterly disgraceful. If any of my kids had Saturday jobs and were treated like that, I'd be absolutely incandescent."

The man said one of his children who "eats absolutely anything" commented that their chicken nuggets and chips "didn't taste right" and that there was "something wrong with them."

He continued: "He was starving anyway and because we'd had issues with the order in the first place, he ate it.

"He's of an age where he'd stick ketchup all over it and he wouldn't know the difference.

"Me and my wife ordered the sausage, it wasn't our first choice but our first choice wasn't available, and it was my wife who said it wasn't right.

"We were that hungry that we ate it anyway. There was nothing wrong with the chips."

The diner alleged that the two tables next to them all ordered fish and complained that is was cold, thinking that it was frozen when it arrived at the table.

"My biggest issue is the way the complaints were dealt with. If you're the owner of a premises, you've got to come down and take it on the chin," he added.

In response to the diners' claims, Mr Hussain said: "It's only the odd person who doesn't want to pay for their food.

"So these people who are putting up all the bad reviews, it's a really busy restaurant and the food is always fresh.

"We buy fish in fresh every day and the potatoes are peeled every day.

"So when people say, 'oh, the chips are cold, the fish was horrible, it doesn't taste right', it's all a load of cobblers because every day, everything is sourced fresh."
