Resident Evil 4 remake – release date, how to preorder and everything you need to know

One of the biggest titles in gaming is getting a new release, and it’s finally just weeks away. Resident Evil 4, the fourth installment in the iconic survival horror franchise, has been remade for the new generation of consoles.

Developed and published by Capcom, the first Resident Evil was released on PlayStation in 1996, and spawned a huge multimedia franchise, with 10 main video game titles, countless spin-offs and several remakes – not to mention a series of films, TV shows and comic books. The original game paved the way for horror games and remains a huge title in the gaming world.

With Resident Evil 4, released in 2005, the franchise shifted to more dynamic shooting action and influenced the evolution of the survival horror and third-person genres with its over-the-shoulder camera perspective. Now, the iconic title is being remade, following the success of both the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes from 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Its official synopsis reads: “Six years have passed since the biological disaster in Racoon City. Leon S. Kennedy, one of the survivors of the incident, has been recruited as an agent reporting directly to the president.

“With the experience of multiple missions on his back, Leon is sent to rescue the kidnapped daughter of the president of the United States. He tracks her to a secluded European village, where there is something terribly wrong with the villagers.

“And the curtain rises on this story of grueling survival horror and rescue.”

The Resident Evil 4 remake largely follows the story of the original, though some changes have been made which will keep aspects of the game feeling fresh. Announcing the game via a PlayStation blog post last year, Capcom Promotion Producer Edvin Edsö said the remake would preserve the essence of the original and “feel familiar to fans of the series.”

“This is being done by reimagining the storyline while keeping the essence of its direction, modernising the graphics and updating the controls to a modern standard,” he continued.

The third-person perspective – now largely the norm for platform games – returns for the remake, while updated graphics for the newer generations of consoles enhance the original game’s feeling and increase its haunting tension. In terms of combat, the remake features the all-new knife parry, allowing players to block enemies and finish them off with the knife.

Crafting ammo is also a feature of the remake, alongside the ability to craft health item using herbs. The iconic merchant is set for a comeback, and he will now provide Leon with several side-missions throughout the game.

A PlayStation VR2 add-on for the game is also in development, with Capcom confirming it will be available as a free download. So if all that sounds like your thing, here’s how to get your hands on the Resident Evil 4 remake:
