'Resident Evil 4 Remake' Leak Reveals Unused Merchant Dialogue Linking It to 'Resident Evil Village'

An interesting "Resident Evil 4 Remake" leak has been making rounds online.

More than 30 minutes of unused dialogue from the game has caught fans off guard. The discovery gives them a look at ideas that Capcom considered but ultimately left out of the final game.

Among the most interesting details is a planned reference to The Duke, the mysterious merchant from "Resident Evil Village." The unused exchange could have created a much stronger link between the two games.

'Resident Evil 4 Remake' Almost Referenced The Duke

The discovery was made by community modder Keff0, who examined files from the PlayStation 5 version of "Resident Evil 4 Remake." The files reportedly contain 671 unused lines of dialogue and subtitles.

The material includes dialogue involving Leon, Luis, Ashley, and the Merchant. Interestingly, the same unused files do not appear to be present in the PC version.

One of the most notable discoveries involves the game's Merchant.

An unused line has the Merchant mentioning The Duke from "Resident Evil Village." It suggests that Capcom may have considered making the two characters part of a more connected merchant legacy within the "Resident Evil" series.

The idea is especially interesting because The Duke himself references the original "Resident Evil 4" Merchant in "Resident Evil Village."

That connection was already a fun nod for longtime fans. Including a similar reference in the remake could have turned it into a deliberate link between the modern games.

Capcom ultimately removed the dialogue.

There is no confirmed explanation for why the line was cut. It may simply have been considered unnecessary. The developers may also have decided that a direct reference would distract from the remake's story.

The Merchant Could Have Been Killed

The unused content goes beyond dialogue. Keff0 also discovered animations and game data suggesting that players may originally have been able to kill the Merchant. That would have had a major gameplay consequence.

According to the discovered data, killing the Merchant would permanently close his shop. He would then remain unavailable for the rest of the player's run.

It is an unusual idea for a character who serves as one of the game's primary vendors.

The concept could have added an interesting layer of risk to encounters with the Merchant. At the same time, permanently losing access to weapons, upgrades, and supplies could have created problems for the game's progression.

That may help explain why the feature did not make it into the finished remake.

More 'Resident Evil 4 Remake' Cut Content Could Surface

Finding unused material is not unusual for a major video game. Development often involves testing ideas that are later changed, replaced, or removed entirely.

What makes these "Resident Evil 4 Remake" discoveries interesting is the insight they provide into Capcom's development process, according to IGN.

The unused dialogue suggests that the remake could have included more connections to other entries in the series. The Merchant material also shows that some early gameplay ideas were considerably different from what players eventually experienced.

Over the next few days, weeks, or even months, modders might unearth more cut dialogue or unused concepts that could potentially come to light.
