Wildlife rescue efforts are under way after a whale got stuck near Port Kembla, south of Sydney.
Marine Rescue NSW volunteers began assisting NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on Saturday after the marine mammal became entangled off Five Islands.
Marine Rescue NSW inspector Glenn Sullivan said good weather conditions meant a successful rescue operation was likely.
“We’ve got a good window of opportunity to assist with the disentanglement operation because the weather conditions are favourable,” he said.
He said a marine rescue vessel would escort a National Parks and Wildlife Service Zodiac to the entangled whale.
A private vessel is currently monitoring the whale.
Whale migration begins in May, when the mammals begin swimming north before starting their southbound journey in August.
The season peak occurs from June through to July.
