Rescue team stretcher woman across waterfall after horror fall at Glen Nevis

A hiker has been rushed to hospital after slipping on a rock in horror conditions . Mountain rescue teams raced to Steall Falls, near near Ben Nevis, after the alarm was raised at around 2.15pm on Thursday.

The woman was close to the waterfall, which is located in a wide open scenic valley backed by the tall mountains of the Nevis Gorge, when she fell. During freezing temperatures and torrential rain a stretcher party was dispatched before the casualty was located with an injured ankle.

Rescue teams applied a splint before carrying the woman down to the car park. Pictures taken from the scene showed rescue teams wrapped up in winter coats attending to the casualty.

Snow could be seen at the gorge as crews battled through the freezing temperatures. Another image showed rescue teams trekking through a waterfall with the stretcher before they handed the woman over to ambulance crews.

Medics then raced her to Belford Hospital in Fort William for further assessment. Their condition is currently unknown.

Posting the images on their Facebook page, a spokesperson for the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team said: "A torrential Thursday afternoon in Steall Gorge. The old saying of wet rocks are slippery rocks couldn’t have been truer.

"A stretcher party was dispatched to assist with an ankle injury. After some simple splintage and a quick birl back to the top car park to our waiting colleagues from the Scottish Ambulance Service, the casualty was taken to the Belford Hospital for further assessment."

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 2.12pm on January 12 to respond to an incident at Glen Nevis. We dispatched one resource to the scene and a female patient was transported to Belford Hospital.”
