A Republican lawyer with ties to the Trump administration is challenging Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis in the upcoming election. Courtney Kramer, who previously interned in the White House counsel's office during Donald Trump's presidency, is the first Republican candidate for district attorney in Fulton County since 2000.

Fulton County, a Democratic stronghold in Georgia and home to a significant portion of the state's electorate, has been under Willis's leadership since January 2021. Willis gained national attention for her investigation into Trump's alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia.

After a lengthy investigation and convening a special grand jury, Willis secured a racketeering indictment against Trump and 18 others in August 2023. While some individuals have pleaded guilty, Trump and the remaining defendants maintain their innocence.

Kramer, the challenger, criticized the Trump prosecution as politically motivated and pledged to recuse herself from the case due to her prior professional interactions with some of the defendants. She emphasized her focus on 'front-end prosecution,' aiming to expedite case reviews, provide timely discovery to defense attorneys, and explore early plea resolutions.

Willis, on the other hand, highlighted her achievements during her tenure, including the implementation of a pre-indictment diversion program, initiatives to deter youth involvement in crime, reductions in homicides, and addressing the backlog of unindicted cases. She expressed intentions to enhance resources for domestic violence victims if re-elected for a second term.
