Reports of swans dying due to bird flu at Attenborough Nature Reserve

Swans at Attenborough Nature Reserve are thought to be dying due to an outbreak of bird flu.

The beauty spot, situated to the south west of Nottingham, said that it has received "a number of reports" of the birds dying, citing the likely cause as bird flu.

It follows a number of cases at Nottinghamshire sites, such as Colwick Country Park earlier this year, as England faces its biggest ever outbreak of the disease.

In a Facebook post, the nature reserve reminded members of the public that the risk to people's was "very low", however urged them not to touch sick or dead birds.

It reassured that the reserve would remain open.

Replying to the post, a number of social media users said they had seen dead and ill swans whilst walking at Attenborough Nature Reserve.

"I saw a poorly one yesterday and its partner was pacing around looking like it was trying to get help, it was awful," said one woman.

Another added: "Very sad, we saw a dead swan the other day but assumed a fox had got it."

The post by Attenborough Nature Reserve says: "Following reports of a number of dead swans at Attenborough Nature Reserve, we believe that the likely cause is Avian Flu which has been confirmed at a number of sites nearby.

"We would like to reiterate that the risk to the public from this strain of avian flu is very low, but people are advised not to touch any sick or dead birds.

"Reporting Dead Birds – Anyone finding dead swans, geese or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, should report them to the Defra helpline on 03459 33 55 77, please select option 7.

"Sick and Injured Birds – sick and Injured birds should be reported to the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999."
