Report: Zach Wilson to remain in Jets plans for 2023

Maybe the Jets truly aren’t going to quit on quarterback Zach Wilson. Per a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Jets and general manager Joe Douglas plan to keep Wilson in their plans for 2023.

There are currently no plans to shop Wilson this offseason, per Rapoport. That, of course, is the opposite of a report from FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, who reported the Jets were planning on moving on from Wilson after the season.

“The team views Wilson as an incredibly hard worker, a good teammate and very smart,” says Rapoport. “He has handled his demotions well and kept working.”

During the Jets’ loss to the Jaguars in Week 16, the team put Chris Streveler in the game to give the offense a spark as a Taysom Hill-type package, but the Jets claimed it was not a benching of Wilson but more of a momentum deal with Streveler.

When Mike White was cleared to return to action last Monday, the Jets quickly renamed him the starter and made Wilson the No. 3 quarterback and said he will be inactive for the final two games of the season, barring injury. Wilson will be watching from the sideline as White tries to lead the Jets to playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Despite all that, the Jets may still have faith in Wilson heading into an offseason where speculation is growing that the Jets will be in the veteran quarterback market (Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr, etc).

Wilson has two years and $9.31 million remaining on his rookie contract as well as a potential fifth-year option. He wouldn’t be an expensive option for the Jets or a potential team acquiring him. But for now, according to Rapoport, the sense is that Wilson will be back in 2023.
