Report: Warriors bracing for likelihood of Bob Myers walking away from the franchise

Following a loss in the second round of the playoffs to LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, questions regarding change loom over the Golden State Warriors. What will happen with Draymond Green’s player option? How do young players like Jordan Poole and Jonathan Kuminga fit alongside the veteran core? Lastly, what does the future hold for one of the pillars of Golden State’s dynasty, Bob Myers?

Myers’ contract with the Warriors is up on June 30. According to Shams Charnia of the Athletic, the Warriors and their current president of basketball operations are “bracing for the likelihood” that Myers could walk away from the franchise. The Warriors and Myers have had no substantial contract extension talks in months, per Charania. Citing sources, Charania reported Myers has received interest from private equity funds and other professional sports leagues.

Myers has been coined the architect of the Warriors dynasty, crafting the teams that won four championships. Since Myers arrived in Golden State’s front office in 2011, the Warriors have made nine trips to the playoffs, including six appearances in the NBA Finals. Myers has won a pair of NBA Executive of the Year awards in the 2014-15 season and 2016-17 season.

During his time with the Warriors, Myers has been at the core of moves that have shaped the franchise like recruiting Kevin Durant, drafting Draymond Green, trading for Andrew Wiggins and hiring Steve Kerr as Golden State’s coach.

With the Warriors entering a pivotal offseason, Myers’ future in Golden State could be the first domino to fall.
