The Chicago Bears are nearing an important quarterback decision that will impact the team for the next decade. The expectation is Chicago will trade veteran Justin Fields and draft Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick.
And while Fields’ trade market has been dwindling, there are still options — including a team that previously showed interest before free agency: the Pittsburgh Steelers.
According to Steelers Now’s Nick Farabaugh, Pittsburgh are showing interest in acquiring Fields…again.
The Steelers were one of several teams mentioned as potential suitors for Fields back at the NFL Scouting Combine. While they appeared to be out on Fields after signing Russell Wilson in free agency, Kenny Pickett being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles has reopened a door for Fields in Pittsburgh.
Farabaugh noted that there’s “legitimate interest,” but a deal isn’t imminent.
Pittsburgh had talks or preliminary interest in a potential Fields trade dating back to the NFL Combine, but the price was too high.
But after the trade for Pickett, there is still interest in Fields. While sources stressed to Steelers Now that the deal is not imminent, there is legitimate interest from Pittsburgh to explore a deal and potentially acquire Fields.
Ultimately, it sounds like general manager Ryan Poles envisioned a more demanding trade market for Fields. But with Fields entering the final year of his rookie deal — and the fifth-year option playing a role — teams haven’t been willing to pay the high price Chicago has been asking for.
Then there’s the report that the Bears aren’t actively shopping Fields right now before coming to a decision on Williams. But with Williams’ pro day this week and a Top 30 visit on the docket for Chicago shortly after, they should soon have a decision.
