Report: Rib injury didn’t slow Chargers’ Justin Herbert in throwing session

It doesn’t sound likely that the Jacksonville Jaguars will face a Justin Herbert-less Los Angeles Chargers squad in Week 3. Despite a rib cartilage fracture, Herbert reportedly did his usual preparation Tuesday and didn’t appear to be encumbered by the injury.

According to Bridget Condon of NFL Network, the Chargers quarterback “didn’t look like he was in visible pain” and “looked like the same old Justin Herbert” during a throwing session Tuesday.

Chargers coach Brandon Staley told reporters Wednesday that Herbert is still “day-to-day” and the team would prepare for the possibility that he’s unable to play Sunday.

Herbert, 24, suffered the injury late in a 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday. While he was in visible pain down the stretch, Herbert remained in the game and led the team down the field for a touchdown with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The 2020 top 10 draft pick earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and made his first Pro Bowl in 2021. Through two games this season, Herbert has six touchdown passes with one interception. Behind him on the depth chart is 13-year veteran Chase Daniel, who hasn’t started an NFL game since 2019.
