The Red Sox and utilityman Kiké Hernández are reportedly parting ways ahead of the 2023 MLB trade deadline.
According to reports from Ken Rosenthal and Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Hernández will be dealt to the Dodgers, reuniting him with the franchise where he’s played the bulk of his MLB career.
Boston’s return on the trade has not yet been reported.
Hernández spent six seasons in Los Angeles, from 2015 to ’20. He appeared in 648 games for the team during that span, registering a .737 OPS with 68 home runs. He was part of the organization’s 2020 World Series-winning team, in what was his final season on the Dodgers.
The 31-year-old has since spent the past three seasons with the Red Sox, though his production has dropped off significantly in 2023. Through 86 games this year, Hernández is slashing .222/.279/.320 with six home runs and 31 RBI. He has a –0.7 fWAR, the lowest among position players on the team.
Hernández is a familiar face in the Dodgers clubhouse, and he’ll look to add quality at-bats against left-handed pitchers to the L.A. lineup, while also providing cover for a number of positions on defense.
