Travin Howard didn’t remain a free agent for very long after being cut by the Los Angeles Rams last week. According to Jordan Schultz, the Rams are re-signing the linebacker to a one-year deal.
He was released last week, just before the Rams gave Cooper Kupp his $80 million extension. They made that move because it freed up $2.54 million, which gave them some additional cap space for Kupp.
Howard was originally retained by the Rams on a restricted free-agent tender, which gave him a base salary of $2.54 million, none of which was guaranteed. It’s unclear how much his new contract will be worth, but it’s likely to be in the same range as his RFA tender was.
Howard is the No. 3 linebacker on the depth chart, behind Ernest Jones and Troy Reeder. He played 12 games and made two starts last season, recording one interception and 21 tackles. He also came down with the game-sealing interception in the NFC title game, putting the Rams through to the Super Bowl.
