The New England Patriots might be hoping for a reunion with Bailey Zappe on the practice squad, but according to the Boston Sports Journal’s Mike Giardi, the team’s preference is signing a veteran No. 2 quarterback option behind Mac Jones.
One would think Zappe would count as a veteran option considering he went 2-0 as a starter last season, when stepping in for an injured Jones.
But the Patriots could be looking for a more experienced signal-caller with more than one year under his belt. They previously had that option with Brian Hoyer, who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders back in April.
I'm told the #Patriots preference remains bringing in a veteran option to be the #2 to Mac Jones.

One thing to consider with Hoyer is how helpful he was off the field as well, especially in the quarterback room with Jones.
The team could be looking for someone to help fill that void, along with serving as a solid emergency backup option, if catastrophe strikes like it did last season.
