Sources: Notre Dame Men’s Basketball Hiring Penn State’s Shrewsberry

Notre Dame is reportedly finalizing a seven-year deal with Penn State’s Micah Shrewsberry to become the Fighting Irish’s next men’s basketball coach, per Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde.

The news comes a day after Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported that Shrewsberry was the top choice to become Notre Dame’s next head coach after the program parted ways with Mike Brey after the 2022-23 season. Shrewsberry also had been  linked to Georgetown’s head coach vacancy as well.

Shrewsberry declined an offer to sign a long-term deal at Penn State, according to ESPN. However, the 46-year-old Indiana native reportedly made the decision to return to his home state with Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish announced in January that Brey would not return as Notre Dame’s head coach for the 2023-24 season.

Shrewsberry joined the Nittany Lions program in 2021. In his first season, Penn State posted a 14-17 mark. However, this season, Shrewsberry’s squad made a men’s NCAA tournament appearance, marking PSU’s first appearance in the Big Dance since ’11, and reached the round of 32.

Now, Shrewsberry will be tasked with guiding Notre Dame back to the NCAA tournament after missing this year’s tournament, finishing the season 11-21 overall and 3-17 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Fighting Irish have made only one NCAA tournament appearance since ’17.
