When the NFL released the names of the 17 prospects invited to attend the 2023 NFL draft, one of the names notably absent was TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston. Johnston is a tremendous prospect but the league took a cautious approach to avoid an awkward situation, according to CBS Sports.
With only 17 players invited, the NFL is already hedging its bets to make sure every guy in the green room gets their name called on Thursday. The NFL never wants a situation like what happened to Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson when he was caught on camera waiting and waiting until he was finally chosen with the last pick of the first round.
The more interesting part of the Johnston situation is that the league invited two other receivers to the draft. USC’s Jordan Addison and Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba are both scheduled to attend. The thing is, the league is picking players based on information they are getting from teams which leads them to believe the players will be selected on Thursday. The value of this wide receiver class has been somewhat overblown but the position itself has enough value, it’s hard to imagine Johnston will fall all the way out of the first round.
