Report: Jets have inquired with Packers about availability of QB Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets have inquired with the Green Bay Packers about the availability of quarterback Aaron Rodgers via trade, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

The Jets are expecting to acquire a veteran quarterback this season, and Rodgers would be a prime target if he becomes available. New York needs a quarterback, and the team recently hired former Packers assistant coach Nathaniel Hackett, a close friend of Rodgers’, to be the new offensive coordinator.

The four-time MVP turns 40 later this year and is coming off one of the worst statistical seasons of his NFL career, but Rodgers also dealt with thumb and rib injuries and the departure of All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams.

The Packers started 3-1, suffered through a 1-7 stretch, won three straight games and then missed out on the playoffs after losing to the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field in Week 18.

Will Rodgers want to take another swing at the Super Bowl in Green Bay, retire from football altogether or request a trade and play for another franchise in 2023?

Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported earlier Sunday that the Packers are open to trading Rodgers if he wants to continue his playing career elsewhere in 2023, but the team is waiting until Rodgers makes a decision on his personal future in football.

The Jets might be a top landing spot for Rodgers considering the talent on both sides of the ball. Adding a quarterback could turn the Jets into a legitimate contender in the AFC. New York holds the No. 13 overall pick in the first round of the 2023 draft.
