Report: Jeff Bezos Hires Firm to Evaluate Possible Commanders Bid

Jeff Bezos’s name is back on the list of potential buyers of the Commanders franchise after he hired an investment firm, according to a report from The Washington Post.

Bezos has hired the Allen & Company investment firm, per the Post, which helped sell the Broncos franchise last year and the Panthers in 2018.

Previously, Bezos was attached to rumors that suggested he was interested in potentially purchasing the team. But, in mid-January, a report came out that Bezos was “likely out” on a possible purchase. At the same time, it was reported that current Commanders owners Dan and Tanya Snyder “prefer not to sell their franchise to the Amazon founder.”

The 59-year-old billionaire, who also owns the Post, is currently the third richest person in the world with a net worth of $126.3 billion, per Forbes. This means if Bezos stays involved with the Commanders sale, he would likely outbid any other potential investors.

As of now, the only known bidder, according to ESPN, is 76ers and Devils owner Josh Harris. It’s unknown what amount he placed his bid for.

Bezos has yet to officially put in a bid for the Commanders franchise.

Bezos’s reported intention with the investment firm is to look into a potential bid on the Commanders after the Snyders hired Bank of America in early November with the hope of selling all or part of the team. That announcement came after a Dec. 8 report from the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform implicated Snyder in perpetuating “a toxic workplace culture by ignoring and downplaying sexual misconduct” within the organization.
