Giants add Nick Gates to 53-man roster

Nick Gates, the New York Giants’ offensive lineman who suffered a horrendous leg injury last September that put his career in jeopardy, has made it all the way back.

On Wednesday, Gates was taken off the PUP list and added to the Giants’ active roster.

“We’ll put him out there. I think he’s improved every day since he’s been out there. He looks ready to go. We’ll see where that takes him. Just keep competing; whenever his number’s called, be ready,” head coach Brian Daboll said, adding that he’s practicing at both guard and center.

“It’s impressive. I mean, so many surgeries and so much rehab. You saw him when I first got here. Just a testament to the young man. It takes a lot of perseverance to go through what he’s been through and to be out here. Impressive young man.”

Gates’ Giants career began as an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska in 2018. After spending his rookie season on injured reserve, Gates proved to be one of the more valuable Giants’ lineman due to his versatility. He played games at center, guard and tackle for Big Blue.

In 2018, Gates played in 16 games, starting three. The next year Goes was named the starting center and strutted all 16 games there.

Last season, Gates was shifted back to guard but saw his season end in Week 2 with the leg injury. His rehab and road back have been well documented.
