Report: Giants, Julian Love have discussed contract extension

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen was impressively transparent during his bye week press conference on Tuesday. He acknowledged that discussions would be had about potential contract extensions for several players this week, including Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones.

A day later, that transparency continues when Schoen, appearing on a few podcasts and radio shows, acknowledged wanting to hang onto inherited talent, again singling out Barkley.

But there were other names that fell off the lips of Schoen. Among them was safety Julian Love, who now appears to be in the crosshairs for a new contract.

Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports that the Giants and Love’s representatives have had discussions about a new contract.

The 24-year-old Love was a fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft and has played various roles for the Giants. However, under defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, Love has taken his game to new heights while also being voted in as captain by his teammates.

Love has established himself as an indispensable part of the Giants’ roster and a culture fit under two separate regimes. And now he appears to be headed toward contractual security.

If the Giants are unable to finalize a new deal with Love this week, expect it to get done early in the offseason.
