The New York Giants are still weeks removed from training camp but are already losing players due to injury.
Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports that linebacker Jarrad Davis is expected to miss an extended period of time after recently undergoing surgery.
Giants middle linebacker Jarrad Davis underwent an undisclosed surgery this summer and is expected to be out long-term, league sources told the Daily News.
Davis, 28, was manning the middle of Wink Martindale’s first-string defense this spring alongside pricey weakside signing Bobby Okereke.
Although Leonard didn’t detail exactly what injury Davis sustained, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post later reported that Davis had undergone knee surgery.
The Giants initially signed Davis off of the Detroit Lions practice squad in late December and he appeared in just one regular season game for the team, recording 11 tackles, one QB hit and 0.5 sacks. He also played in the Giants’ two postseason games.
Davis re-signed with the Giants on a one-year, $1.18 million contract in March.

The salary goes from $1.08 million to a $550,000 split salary if he’s not on the team’s active/inactive list.
The deal carries a reduced veteran salary benefit cap hit ($1.04 million), and the $75,000 roster bonus only comes due if Davis is on the active roster for one regular season game this season.
In Davis’ absence, the Giants will rely on second-year linebackers Darrian Beavers and Micah McFadden. They may also opt to sign a veteran free agent.
