New Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is quickly filling out his coaching staff to make sure he puts his team in what he thinks is the best situation going forward.
After reports came out on Thursday that the Dolphins fired defensive backs coach George Alexander, Miami decided to keep defensive coordinator Josh Boyer in his role, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Omar Kelly.
It had been previously reported that Miami was interested in bringing in former Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio for this position, but the two sides didn’t get a deal done.
Boyer has spent the last three years with Miami, two of which were as defensive coordinator, after 13 seasons with the New England Patriots. In 2021, his defense struggled to play to the level of their competition in the first half of the season, giving up the fourth-most points per game (29.1) through the first two months. However, by the end of the year, they moved up to 15th-fewest (21.9) by the end of the year.
There have been rumors that Brian Flores took over calling the defensive plays that led to the changes, but Flores had said that Boyer had called the Baltimore game, so it appears Boyer at least had control through Week 10 if not through the end of the season.
McDaniel’s coaching staff is starting to come together. He has Boyer and special teams coordinator Danny Crossman returning in their roles. Wide receivers coach Wes Welker and tight ends coach Jon Embree have both followed McDaniel to Miami from San Francisco as well.
Now, the only coordinator spot they have left to fill is offensive coordinator, which they are reportedly interviewing Atlanta Falcons quarterback coach Charles London and New Orleans Saints wide receivers coach/senior offensive assistant Curtis Johnson for.
