Report: Cowboys Promote Scott Tolzien to QB Coach

The Cowboys decided to promote offensive assistant Scott Tolzien to the quarterbacks coach role, the Fort-Worth Star Telegram reported on Wednesday.

Tolzien will replace Doug Nussmeier after he went to the Chargers for the same role. Nussmeier worked as Dallas’s quarterbacks coach for the three seasons prior.

Tolzien will work with the Cowboys’ new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who replaced Kellen Moore after he was fired and then took the OC position with the Chargers.

The former NFL quarterback has experience working with the Cowboys QBs, after spending the last three seasons as an offensive assistant.

When Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy led the Packers, Tolzien played for him as a backup quarterback from 2013 to ’15. He also played on the 49ers from 2011 to ’12, and finished out his career with the Colts from 2016 to ’17.

The 2023 season will be starting quarterback Dak Prescott’s eighth with the Cowboys. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush is a free agent this offseason, while third-string quarterback Will Grier will be on the last year of his contract with Dallas.
