The Boston Celtics have begun the 2023 season with a massive three-team deal according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Boston is sending veteran guard Marcus Smart to Memphis as part of the deal.
In return, the Celtics will receive draft capital and former All-Star Kristaps Porzingis in a blockbuster transaction involving the Celtics, Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies.
At the time of this writing, not all of the details of the trade are known. Boston is reportedly set to receive the No. 25 pick in Thursday’s NBA draft and a future first-round pick from Memphis. The Celtics will send this year’s No. 35 pick to Washington. The Wizards are landing Grizzlies point guard Tyus Jones as part of the deal, as well as Boston’s Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala.
This radically changes the shape of Boston’s roster, and details are still coming through. For now, it looks as if Celtics president Brad Stevens has decided an earlier than wanted postseason exit this spring demanded addressing. Evidently that process begins tonight.
