Report: Buccaneers to Take Major Step Forward in Baker Mayfield Decision at Combine

Baker Mayfield had a bounce back season in 2023, leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the playoffs with an NFC South title. While the quarterback is set to hit free agency next month, it appears that Tampa Bay doesn’t want to let him go.

Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times reports that the Buccaneers and Mayfield’s representation are expected to discuss a contract extension during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis after already briefly touching base.

The Buccaneers have several key free agents to try and bring back, including star wide receiver Mike Evans and defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr. However, Mayfield may be a priority since he plays quarterback and solidified the position for Tampa Bay after Tom Brady retired.

Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly started contract discussions.

Mayfield had a career season last year, setting career highs with 4,044 passing yards and 28 passing touchdowns. The 28-year-old was a finalist for Comeback Player of the Year and appears to have his career back on track after a disappointing few seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams.

While Mayfield could explore free agency, it certainly seems like he is more than happy in Tampa Bay. If the Buccaneers are able to lock in their quarterback for 2024 and beyond, the team can then focus on keeping together the rest of the roster that has won three straight division titles and made four straight playoff appearances.
