Just one year into the five-year, $50 million deal he signed last offseason, star linebacker Bobby Wagner and the Rams have agreed to mutually part ways, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
For the second consecutive offseason, Wagner will become a free agent and will immediately be one of the most sought after defensive players on the market this spring.
Per Schefter, the Rams were looking to clear cap space, and Wagner is looking to join a situation where he can win. With the team fresh off a Super Bowl victory last offseason, Wagner assuredly thought he was joining a winning situation with the Rams in Los Angeles.
However, injuries to key positions on both sides of the football sunk the Rams’ 2022 campaign, as they stumbled to a 5–12 record and missed the playoffs for the first time under coach Sean McVay.
Wagner started all 17 games at linebacker for the Rams this season, and recorded a career-high six sacks to go along with 140 combined tackles. He also made his ninth straight All-Pro team, receiving second-team honors.
The 32-year-old Wagner clearly has plenty left in the tank and will certainly have a sizable market during free agency.
