Remember that report from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk that former Patriots coach Bill Belichick could be the next head coach of the Washington Commanders?
Florio was adamant that Belichick and Washington could be a match.
However, the Washington local media debunked any rumored interest from the Commanders’ new ownership led by managing partner Josh Harris.
On Thursday, Washington hired Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as its new head coach. As predicted, the reaction was mixed. Some fans were frustrated, while others had the correct approach in trusting new GM Adam Peters. The response from around the NFL was entirely positive.
Shortly after Quinn’s hiring was announced, Dianna Russini of The Athletic came out with a report that Belichick was indeed considered for the job.
During the hiring process in Washington, Bill Belichick was considered for the job, per sources. The Commanders spoke with him and he had support from some decision makers. In the end, Dan Quinn is their choice.

How strong was that consideration? He wasn’t known to be among the eight reported interviews Washington conducted in the search process. That doesn’t mean the two sides didn’t talk, but it doesn’t sound like the interest from Washington’s side was serious. After all, it could be as simple as Harris asking Peters, “Hey, what do you think of Belichick?”
One issue would be Belichick requiring more power, something that wasn’t going to happen with the Commanders under Harris and Peters.
Scott Abraham of ABC 7 in Washington, D.C. spoke to someone in Harris’ camp who noted there were some inconsistencies in those reports.
Over the past hour I have seen some reports that the Commanders talked with Bill Belichick for the job.
A source in the Josh Harris camp told me, that there are inconsistencies in those reports.
Everyone was fully aligned in the decision to hire Dan Quinn.

The point is moot now. Washington hired Quinn.
