Bill Belichick might have been entertaining a black and green hoodie instead of a Carolina blue one.
Per a report from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the legendary NFL coach’s inner circle had informal conversations with the New York Jets before he accepted the head coaching job at North Carolina.
The Jets have moved forward with Jeff Ulbrich as their interim head coach after firing Robert Saleh during the season. Russini wrote:
For months, Belichick’s inner circle quietly conducted informal conversations with a few teams, testing the waters. A very small circle of people in the Jets building were made aware of his interest, though I was told no meeting or formal conversation ever happened because the UNC opportunity popped up.
It would seem as if Belichick put some feelers out there for an NFL opportunity before officially jumping on the college train.
Many have tried to understand why he’d go that route when he’s only 15 wins away from surpassing Don Shula as the winningest coach in NFL history. One has to wonder if the opportunity wasn’t there for the future Hall of Fame coach.
It would have made for quite the headline seeing Belichick return to the Jets and coach against the New England Patriots twice a year. Imagine Belichick coaching for the same Jets team he resigned from after serving only one day as their head coach back in 2000.
It would have been one of the biggest stories in NFL history.
