The Bengals are working out two former XFL quarterbacks—Reid Sinnett and Drew Plitt—with Joe Burrow scheduled to miss several weeks due to a calf strain injury he suffered in practice Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Sinnett, who had brief stints with the Buccaneers, Dolphins and Eagles, last played for the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas. However, the team placed him on injured reserve after breaking his foot.
In one game last season, Sinnett threw for 97 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Prior to working out for the Bengals, Sinnett previously worked out with the Colts and Seahawks.
Plitt was part of the Bengals training camp last year as Burrow recovered from his appendectomy. More recently, he appeared in five games for the XFL’s Arlington Renegade.
Plitt’s brief stint with the Bengals generated some positive moments in ’22 NFL preseason action when he threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Kendric Pryor against the Cardinals. But after the preseason, Cincinnati waived him.
McDaniel: With Joe Burrow Injured, What to Know About Bengals Backup QBs
While Bengals coach Zac Taylor is looking at adding another quarterback to the franchise’s roster, Cincinnati already has two primary backups in Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning.
A Sinnett or Plitt signing would give the Bengals another quarterback for insurance purpose with Burrow’s absence. However, while Burrow likely will not play in preseason action, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that Week 1 “should be a realistic possibility” for the return for the Bengals starting signal caller.
