One potential candidate for the 49ers’ defensive coordinator job appears to be heading to the Minnesota Vikings. Mike Klis, of 9News in Denver, reported the Broncos have released defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero from his contract despite their efforts to keep him in Denver. Klis also reported “all signs point to Evero as (Vikings’) DC.”
This report came shortly after NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport first reported Evero was set to interview with Minnesota.
There was no indication the 49ers requested an interview with Evero, but he’s a sharp, young defensive mind with only a year of experience as a coordinator. That fits the mold for the 49ers’ DC hires under Kyle Shanahan. Evero to this point hadn’t been able to interview for DC openings because he was still under contract with the Broncos. He is also a candidate for the Colts and Cardinals’ head coach positions.
Evero has ties to Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell from their days coaching the Rams together, but it’s hard to believe the 49ers wouldn’t be at least semi-appealing if they did aim to interview Evero.
They have a wealth of talent on that side of the ball, and the last two 49ers defensive coordinators have gone on to earn head coaching jobs.
It’s not off the table yet if the 49ers do want to bring in Evero for an interview, but the window does appear to be closing.
