House Republicans have selected Rep. Lisa McClain, R-Mich., as the new House GOP Conference Chair, replacing Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., in the party's leadership ranks. McClain was elected to the No. 4 leadership position for Republicans in the chamber during an internal race on Wednesday evening.
McClain, who previously served as House Republicans' conference secretary in the 118th Congress, emerged as the favorite to win the position over Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla. Cammack's bid received support from Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., as well as groups like the Log Cabin Republicans and the national Young Republicans organization.
On the other hand, McClain garnered broad support from various factions within the Republican Conference, including members of the House Freedom Caucus and rank-and-file national security hawks.
Elise Stefanik, the outgoing GOP Conference Chair, had initially planned to seek re-election but accepted President-elect Donald Trump's nomination to serve as his ambassador to the United Nations.
The House GOP Conference Chair is responsible for overseeing and executing messaging strategy within the House GOP. In addition to McClain's election, the House GOP unanimously backed Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., for his position again.
