Rentokil warns public of health risk as flies increase this summer

Rentokil is urging people to be mindful of food safety this summer as flies multiply nationwide.

The pest typically thrives in the summer months amid warmer temperatures. The pest control agency confirmed Dublin has the third worst callout rate for flies nationwide, accounting for 13 per cent of all cases.

Flies can be a health hazard if they come into contact with food. The insect poses the risk of spreading harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Campylobacter spp.

Rentokil's Technical Manager Colm Moore said: "More flies equate to an increased risk of exposure to harmful microbes and chances of getting ill. Their presence can pose the threat of violating food or hygiene regulations for businesses."

Swarms of flies also act as a nuisance by leaving stains on walls or fabric. Their collective excrement in indoor spaces tends to cause a bad smell.

Rentokil has recommended covering up leftovers amid the warm weather to avoid contamination. Food compost bins should also be kept tightly sealed.

Additionally, homeowners should fix leaky taps or broken drains to avoid excessive flies in their home. Swarms usually gather around sources of moisture, especially in the warmer weather.
