Staff at Renfrewshire Foodbank say they will be able to make a “huge difference” to those facing food poverty thanks to a generous £10,000 donation.
The food bank – which helps thousands of people across the local authority – was given the huge cash boost by local company Canmoor, which represents the owners of Westway at Paisley-based Glasgow Airport.
Westway, Scotland’s largest fully enclosed industrial park, houses one of the distribution centres for the food bank.
As part of the Trussel Trust, the food bank offers support to anyone at a time of crisis in Renfrewshire and offers balanced nutritious food parcels to individuals and families who are in need.
The food bank, which runs a mobile service for those in Renfrewshire’s villages, also provides items such as toiletries, nappies and other essentials.
Other additional lifeline services are also available, with the aim of helping vulnerable people get support.
The organisation already has a fuel bank initiative, which offers people pre-paid vouchers so they do not have to choose between heating and eating.
Renfrewshire Foodbank manager, Crystal Clayton, said the kind donation will allow the organisation to help even more people who are struggling.
She said: “This donation will make a huge difference and has come at a perfect time.
“With the cost of fuel, food, energy and rent on the rise, people have been increasingly turning to the food bank for help to feed themselves and their families.
“Our service is deemed to be short term and we look to support people through our referral networks to get back on their feet and be better able to self-manage their own situation. Over the past year, we have distributed 110 tonnes of food to local people and saved the local community over £200,000 on their food bills.”
Gregor King, Westway asset manager of Canmoor, added: “The food bank is a very worthwhile local charity and we are pleased to be able to offer our support.
“It provides a fantastic service right across our community and is sadly relied upon by an increasing number of families, who are facing the additional strain of the cost-of-living crisis.”
