Renfrew stretch unbeaten run to 11 games with dominant win against Greenock as boss eyes up cup success

Manager Jimmy Quigley was delighted to see his on-form Renfrew side stretch their unbeaten run to 11 games with a dominant win against Greenock Juniors.

Now he’s hoping to steer his flying team another step closer to the Scottish Cup as the New Western Park side look to fire their way into the semi finals of the Demolition Cup.

‘Frew put Greenock to the sword on Saturday, with centre back David McCallum netting the opener from a corner - his first goal for the club.

Dominic Innes stretched the lead with a sublime free-kick from distance that sailed into the top bin, with Ciaran Diver adding the third after a swift counter attack.

The victory puts Renfrew four points clear at the top of the Second Division table after the first eight games of the season.

This weekend the club turn their attention to their Demolition Cup quarter final tie with Third Division side Finnart, with Quigley determined to steer his side one step closer to a rare trophy that would also earn them a spot in next season’s Scottish Cup.

Quigley told Express Sport: “I was delighted with the performance against Greenock. They’re a great young team but our experience paid off in the end.

“We’ve had 10 wins and one draw in our last 11 games and the boys are absolutely buzzing.

“It was great to get a clean sheet as well. McCallum grabbed his first goal for us after about five years, he’s not normally past the halfway line to be fair to him!

“We’re four points clear at the top with everyone having played the same number of games, which is definitely promising.

“We’ve got Finnart next in the Demolition Cup and they’ve picked up some great players. They’re no mugs, they won their league last season so they’ll be feeling confident too.

“The winners of the Demolition Cup get entry into the Scottish Cup next season, which is a big carrot for any club at our level.

“There are some very good clubs left in the competition, and we’ve still got to make it to the semi finals yet, but if we do we’re only two steps away.

“Renfrew haven’t won a cup for a very long time. It would be a big boost for the club to get our hands on some silverware again this season.”

Having had tough clashes with teams from lower divisions already in the early stages of this campaign, Quigley insists his side won’t be taking Finnart lightly this weekend.

He said: “We certainly won’t be taking the challenge Finnart pose us for granted.

“We had the same challenge when we took on Saltcoats. Everyone thinks you should cruise games against lower league teams but that’s simply not the case.

“For me the main difference between the divisions is just the amount of mistakes teams make. If a lower league team has a great game and keeps mistakes to a minimum they can be a real threat for anyone at our level.”
