A remote country house was sealed off by police following a bomb alert. The residents of several neighbouring properties were also evacuated over concerns about explosives.
Police were first called to the house in Pilmuir Holdings in Newton Mearns, south of Glasgow, on Tuesday evening following an alleged disturbance. It’s understood they then had concerns that explosive devices and equipment could be on the premises.
As a result paramedics and fire officers were then called to the house. It’s understood that a bomb disposal team also attended. This evening, police continued to seal off the small road leading in and out of of the properties.
A Scottish Ambulance Service incident response unit and a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service vehicle were also in attendance. Two portaloos have also been placed at the scene for investigators. Police provided little detail of what was taking place. But they confirmed that an operation was underway.
A spokesperson added: “Officers were called to a property in Pilmuir Holdings, Newton Mearns, at around 6.15pm on Thursday, February, 2 2023 following a report of a man causing a disturbance. A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this and enquiries are continuing. Officers remain at the address and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”
The remote area near the Ayr Road and M77 is a mix of homes, small businesses and farms. One resident who lives about 250 yards from the scene said he and other neighbours were in the dark over the police investigation. He added: “I have no idea who lives at the property and the police are saying nothing.”
A local garage owner said he was prevented from attending his workshop by the police blockade. It is understood that the 27-year-old man arrested during the weel has not been charged. It is also not known if the evacuated residents have been allowed to return to their properties.
East Renfrewshire provost Mary Montague represents families in the area. She said: “I have been informed homes have been evacuated. I hope the situation is resolved quickly and safely. Our emergency services do an amazing job. They go towards danger when the rest of us would run away.”
