Remembering the demolition of Edinburgh's troubled housing estate

Residents who grew up in Edinburgh at any time between the late 1960’s until 2011 will remember the Western skyline of the capital being dominated by the high rises of Sighthill.

The four tower blocks towered over the green of Sighthill Park and were home to hundreds of families during their fifty year history.

Broomview House, Glenalmond Court, Hermiston Court and Weir Court - all containing 95 flats - were approved for construction in 1965.

But the estate where the homes in the sky were situated was condemned by the local authority, Edinburgh City Council, in 2007 after it was found that they were suffering from poor construction and a myriad of social issues.

The 11-storey ‘Broomhouse View’ was the first to be demolished on Sunday September 21 2008 at 11:15am by Safedem after residents of the block had been rehomed elsewhere in the city.

A former resident of the block had the honour of pressing the button to initiate the detonation.

The remaining three structures were demolished on Sunday September 25 at 11:15am.

The remaining low-rise buildings that surrounded the high rises were demolished in the following years to make way for a new regeneration 320-home development costing around £60m.

A Youtube video - which has been watched over 20,000 times - shows the demolition of two high-rise buildings in 2011 has begun to recirculate online.

It shows the moment that hundreds of Edinburgh residents gathered to watch the iconic buildings come down.

A series of small bangs is heard to scare away any nearby birds or animals before louder bangs signal the coming down of the once iconic homes.

The video shows the demolition in slow motion as well as in real time.
